What to do during a blizzard

What do you do during a blizzard? You may ask. Well, for this woman, she is sitting catching up on all the things that did not get done before Christmas. The short list is cleaning the house, and doing the blog. The long list is much too long and is no fun anyway, so we will ignore it! I am also glad that I am not a man. Particularly my "man". Mark was out scooping snow at 7:30 a.m., so he could get a vehicle out to go to town in. I am happy being the "kept" woman that gets to stay in the nice warm house, cooking and cleaning. As long as we don't loose electricity I will be fine. Since I did not get a Christmas letter out this year, this will have to be our late Merry Christmas to everyone.

Now, what have we been doing for the last month. Well, lets see, we have been running here and there, and pretty much everywhere, but don't seem to have gone anywhere. Oh, yeh, we had Christmas in there somewhere. Was that just a week ago? Wow, how the time flies. I know Pastor, Christmas is not over until Epiphany, but I had to get the Christmas decorations down and get my house back to normal. I did well getting the decorations down and put away, I only forgot one thing this year!

We had a very nice Christmas. Christmas Eve was spent at the church candle light service, then the 4 of us came home and unwrapped the gifts. Grandma and Grandpa COWS (Mark's parents) came down Christmas day. After church, we opened more gifts then had a nice meal. G & G stayed the night, and part of the next day. The girls had their Sunday School Christmas Program on the 26th, and other than Lexi not being able to say "register", they did very well, even though Kyra had to be an angle again! Not good for a devil child.

Mark and I headed back to work on Monday. The girls are out of school until Jan. 3rd. The girls did a real nice job of cleaning the house and doing chores before Christmas, but have been bums this week. What is up with that? Lexi has done some babysitting, and is suppose to babysit today, but not sure if she will make it in.

On Wed. after working at Kimball, I went through Scottsbluff on my way home. A store there was having a sale on furniture. If you will notice in the Christmas pictures we are lacking furniture in our basement. I sold all our old stuff this summer, and have not found anything till now. Anyway, I wanted a couch, love seat, and a recliner. They were out of the love seat, but since we were thinking of a sectional anyway, we decided to get 2 couches for the basement, and the recliner for upstairs (since it is small). Mark was home, so the question was how to get everything to Bridgeport in the least amount of trips. Mark said "I think you can get the recliner in your Bug" yes, the VW Bug. I said "well, I can try". The guy that was loading the chair for me told me "I was thinking how funny it would be if she drove up in that Bug, then you did, and I didn't think it was so funny any more." Well, to make a long story short, we did get the recliner in the back of the Bug, unfortunately, we were only able to get one couch in the Yukon at a time, so Mark had to make 2 trips to SB.

Today is New Year's Eve. We invited several friends out this evening, but not sure if everyone will make it due to the snow. I guess if they make it, but can't get home we have several beds, and 2 new couches to sleep on!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year. See you in 2011

Where once there was three

First of all, Happy Birthday to Mark! Not the best birthday for him. He looked in the mirror this morning, and said "man I am sure turning grey." His birthday breakfast consisted of a granola bar, then as we were heading to church we noticed that ours and the two neighbors mail boxes were missing from in front of our house. No time to investigate this morning so off we headed to town. At the end of church, the gal that was doing fellowship noticed that it was Mark's birthday, so announced in church that there were birthday brownies downstairs for fellowship time. After everyone was downstairs, another gal started the entire room singing to Mark. I made the comment that you could roast marshmallows on his face. We headed home after church, and luckily we had an extra mailbox, so Mark went to work putting up a new one. Not only did the fool that hit them break all the posts, but then he took the mailboxes with him. If he is caught, he will be in bigger trouble than just hitting them, as we and the neighbors all still had mail in them, we are talking federal crime here. And besides, our mailbox was a John Deere mailbox that cost a lot of money!

This last weekend I spent cleaning. I mean deep cleaning in the basement. It sure did need it! I also cleaned the play room and the room that Lexi vacated a few months ago. I have about 3 double arm loads of stuff to take to the dumpster, but think that I will wait for a little warmer weather. There is also a dead mouse smell that is coming from the play room closet, but after gingerly removing everything from the closet, I still did not find him. I think he might have died in the walls, yuck! Today after cooking the German chocolate cake, I need to finish the upstairs cleaning, then we will be ready for Thanksgiving.

Speaking of Thanksgiving... My folks are coming up from Texas to celebrate with us. The weather looks like it might hold for their trip, lets hope so, since Mom is bring the turkey. We are hopeful that Mark can get my Dad's tractor done so that they can take it back home with them, again if the weather and road conditions stay good. Mark has the engine put back together, all but the oil pump, which is what we are thinking caused it to start knocking right after Mark fixed it 2 weeks ago. I hope that is it, and it will run well for years to come.

Well, best go for this week. The Douthit's wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Catching up

I was thinking 2 weeks ago, that I would be an every 2 week blogger. Well, 2 weeks later and I am thinking if I can get this blog done once a month I will be doing good! Now I have to try and remember what has happened over the last month.

Now that I have read what happened the last time I wrote, I can catch everyone up.

Our $2000.00 well bill ended up being a $2600.00 well bill. We received the bill on Wednesday, and the guy called to get the check from us on Thursday. We hadn't even told the other households how much the bill was going to be. Everyone was able to round up their share, and we were able to pay the bill by the next week.

Unfortunately, that took the money I was saving to pay the tax/title and license on the Yukon. So have been saving and moving money around so I can pay that this week, to the tune of $1400.00. For those that don't live in Nebraska, that is the correct amount. When I first moved here I couldn't believe how much it cost either!

I discharged all my patients in Kimball, so have been working at the out patient clinic for the last 3 weeks. It is nice to have a break from the drive, but I am going to miss my mileage check at the end of the month, and with Christmas coming up, I will really notice it. I also miss seeing all the people at the nursing home.

Mark has been working on tractors. My Dad brought up his little Yanmar tractor in August. Mark tore apart the engine and after looking at the manual that was written in Japanese, he called a place to get the information needed. He ordered parts, sent back the wrong parts, ordered more parts, had to call for the right specs... but finally finish last week. Kind of. He was running the tractor, but still didn't like the sound, so reved the engine, and it started knocking! I am guessing that is not a good sound since he shut it off right away, came in the house and said I am not working on it any more! In the mean time, Mark went to the ranch to work on his Dad's 3010 John Deere. The transmission was bad. Mark pulled the part that was bad out, and then found a used part to put in. I get a phone call Saturday morning that goes like this:
Laura- Hello
Mark- What are you doing?
This is where I made my mistake
Laura-Nothing
Mark- Could you run by Bridgeport Tractor Parts and get a part for me, and then run it up here? Please!
Laura- Of course I can, I only have a house to clean
So the rest of the day was spent in the car going to Crawford and back. Then the kicker is that Mark can't get the part back in, without taking the entire transmission out of the tractor, so he ends up bringing the transmission home anyway. After he got home, we all loaded up in the pickup and went and cut 2 loads of firewood. The rest of the week was spent trying to get the transmission put back together which was not fun, but I will not go into all the details here. Suffice it to say there was a lot of cussing coming from the shop, and since I was out most nights helping Mark some of the cussing was coming from me! Mark finally got it done on Thursday. He took off work to work on the transmission, and also spend the day with his parents that came down for the Veterans Day celebration at school. Mark and Kyra took the transmission back to the ranch this last weekend, and the 3010 seems to be running well again. Now back to the Yanmar for Mark.

This last weekend was the start of deer season, so Kyra went with her dad up to the ranch, so she could help Grandma feed the guys and clean. She was so proud when she came home with $20 for all her work. Lexi spent Saturday babysitting, so I mainly had a quiet day to work on house work.

Sunday was our Thanksgiving dinner at church. I made a turkey and rolls. I stayed and helped clean some, then Lexi and I headed home. Mark and Kyra got home around 2:30 that afternoon. I made soup and chili and bread bowls to put it in. The Strawn's came over for supper and we had a nice visit, it seems like forever since they have been over.

Winter has finally arrived here, so we have been enjoying all the firewood that was cut 1 1/2 weeks ago. Mom and Dad are planning to come up for Thanksgiving if the weather cooperates. One week to go!

What a week!

As usual, the Douthit's have been running here to there with not much to show for all the running. Last weekend we headed to Casper WY on Thursday night, as the girls where out of school on Friday. We spent the night with Brother-in-law Jay. The next morning we were up bright and early and headed out to look at a new SUV that Mark had his eye on. Mark has said for years that the Tahoe is just too small to take on trips, when you have to take everything in the house plus the kitchen sink (according to Mark), and has wanted something bigger since about the moment when we bought the Tahoe. I on the other hand am thinking, we have the Tahoe paid off, and I don't like car payments. We can get enough stuff in the Tahoe, and if not, maybe we should take less. To make a long story short, we ended up buying the vehicle that we were looking at. It is a 2006 GMC Yukon. It is fairly plain jane, as far as today's standards go. It has cloth seats, and no DVD player. The good part about it is it only had 13000 miles on it. We got a good deal for us, and left WY with it.

After looking at the Yukon, we headed over to Lander WY, which was our original reason for our weekend trip. We were about 1-2 weeks too late to see the aspen in full color, but did get to see some, and enjoyed our time away. We headed back to Casper on Saturday to finish the car purchase, then headed home Sunday after Mark and Jay did a little work to Jay's house. Jay is going to start telling us that we can't come to his house and stay, because every time we do, a new home improvement DIY project is started.

I had suffered through a pain in my face that settled in my tooth all weekend, so called the Dentist on Monday, and they were able to get me in. I guess it had been over a year since my last cleaning, and I am suppose to go every 6 months. Where does the time go? The pain was getting to be less, and after my teeth were clean, it was all but gone. The x-rays did not show anything, but the dentist did say that I would most likely need a root canal, and a crown. I have decided to hold off as long as I can on that, as I have been through 3 root canals, and have not enjoyed any of them. He gave me a script for some antibiotics in case I start getting the pain again over the weekend. So far, so good.

My Mom and Dad headed to Israel on Monday. There is a web sight that friends and family can go to, to see how the trip is going, and you can also send them some notes. I was unable to get onto the sight for several days, so called my big sister, and she called the church to get the correct web address. Looks like Mom and Dad are having fun, and I am sure they will come home with lots of stories of their adventures.

Monday night Harold called and said that he had to have a test run on Wednesday, and could I work for him? Not a problem. Everything turned out fine on Harold's test, unfortunately he could not work the rest of the week, so I was very busy, doing both jobs.

Friday finally got here, and as I am leaving Kimball I get a call from the school. Not a good call to get on a Friday afternoon. I, of course am thinking, who got in trouble and has to stay after school. The news was just as bad, if not worse. Lexi is on the phone, saying that Kyra got sick all over her clothes and books, and can I come and get them? Well, no, unless you want to wait an hour. I'll call dad. Mark picks them up and takes them home. Kyra gets in the shower to clean up. The rest of the night we are reminded how much her tummy hurts. She seemed to be fine the next day, but still complaining that her stomach does not feel well.

Saturday was volley ball. Kyra stayed home, but Lexi was able to play. While she was playing, I went to the church to finish the bulletin, not being able to do it before since I was working for Harold. I then headed back home and worked on cleaning the house. I had not moped my kitchen floor for 2 weeks!!

Sunday we woke up to Kyra still not feeling well, and Mark complaining of a sore throat. We did not got to church, but I am teaching Sunday school, so headed in for that. There were not a lot of kids for Sunday school, so another teacher was going to take my class, so I headed back home to finish the cleaning. When I got home I turned on the water and nothing happened. Grabbed Mark, and we headed down to the well. After blowing 2 fuses, we decided that we had a big problem. Mark found the pump/ well guy in town, and 3 hours and $2000 later we have water again. We had to put in a new motor on the pump and a new pressure tank. We have a 3 HP motor, as we have 3 houses on one well. We knew that the pressure tank was going out, but hoped that we could get by for a while. I guess not! I think that God is punishing me for laughing at the people in town that are having to boil their water due to the e-coli in their water. That will teach me!

We are now back to Monday, and everyone went to school and work. I hope they all stay there!

Monday, October 4, 2010

Ok, I know, I am 2 weeks behind again. So I am not back in the swing of things! I'm sure you did not miss much last week, we are not that exciting.

What I remember of last week, is mainly the weekend, because I have pictures. Kyra and I spent Saturday in Scottsbluff at the Zoo. Kyra's Girl Scout troop went for a day of activities. I think they all had a good time, creating and learning. I had 4 girls ride up with me, then 3 back home (no, I did not forget one, she stayed in town with her mom). As we were leaving Scottsbluff, I get a phone call from my husband. At this point the debate is should I answer, knowing what he wants, or ignore and let him worry that something has happened to us. I answer.
Mark "where are you"
Laura "just leaving town"
Mark "when you get back can you come over and help me? After you change clothes."
Laura silence
Mark "please"
Laura "I guess so"
So after meeting parents at the community center (our standard meeting point), I head home to change then head back in to the Parsonage to help Mark plain the boards of the deck. See above pictures. Pastor and Sarah were also there to help. I informed my husband that I could help that day, but Sunday was tomato canning day, so don't even ask. We quit work about 5:30 p.m., and went home and got cleaned up for a surprise birthday party for a friend. The girls were invited to stay at Pastor and Sarah's for supper, which helped a lot as I did not have anything to fix for them.

Sunday was spent at church in the morning, then Mark and Lexi headed to the parsonage to work on the deck, and Kyra and I made spaghetti sauce. 8 1/2 quarts of sauce later, we were done. So people don't think we were being lazy, we headed to a friends house and picked up 3 gallon bags of grapes, that she had frozen and didn't want all of them. We put those on to cook down, and then put them through the cheese cloth. I was off Monday morning, so was able to make the jelly on Monday, instead of doing my blog. Mark, Lexi, Pastor and Sarah were able to get all the boards plained on the deck, and most of the side boards sanded, so they also had a full day.

The big even this week, was Lexi's 12th birthday. I can't believe it has been 12 years. Her day started like this.
Mom "Good morning Lexi, Happy Birthday"
Lexi "Can I open one present?"
Mom"No"
Lexi (crying) "But Kyra got to open one the morning of her birthday"
Mom "Your dad has already gone to work, and he would like to watch you open one"
Lexi "That's not fair!"
And the next thing you know, she is stomping out of the house to catch the bus. I have been informed that it just goes down hill from here, at least until they are about 15-16, some say as late at 18, but I think that is just because they leave for college. After school, once again she wanted to open one present, and the answer was no, since neither Mom or Dad were home. Once everyone was in the same place, she was allowed to open ALL her presents (all 3). We then loaded up in the Tahoe, and headed to Scottsbluff to go out to eat at Chilli's (Lexi's choice). The next night Lexi had 4 girls over for pizza and then went to the homecoming game (Bridgeport won!). Only 3 were able to spend the night, but that was plenty. I was told that the last girl went to sleep around 3:00 a.m. The next day was volley ball, so there wasn't much sleeping in.

Mark worked Saturday, then he and Lexi headed back over to the parsonage to finish up what they could on the deck. Kyra and I worked on tomatoes again and did pizza sauce this time. We got 18 pints, and 8- 1/2 pints.

Sunday was church and Sunday school. Mark mowed the lawn, and I put a turkey in the oven. We had Thanksgiving in October and invited Pastor who is by himself, as Sarah and the kids went to Michigan, and Milo over for supper.

Now we are back to Monday, and the work week starts. Lexi got up this morning asking where her "skinny" jeans were.
Mom "I don't know"
Lexi "They are all dirty because you don't do laundry!"
Mom "Yesterday would have been a good time to tell me that you were out of jeans, or you could have done them yourself. I did laundry last Monday, and I will do laundry today."
Lexi- stomp out the door to catch the bus, not in skinny jeans, and having to take her clarinet even though she only had one hand left to carry anything!
This sure seems to be becoming a pattern.
Until next week...

Back in the swing of things

I have decided that summer is great if you are one of those people that do not like schedules. We have run from one thing to another this summer, and are finally back into the schedule mode, that I like best.

I like to do my blog on Monday morning. It is Tuesday morning, now, because I had a bulletin for a funeral to do yesterday, so had to work at the church. I am going to try to get to the gym 3 times this week to workout, and I was able to get my b**t out of bed yesterday and go. Why I ever stop going is beyond me! I hate that first workout feeling ie. that I am going to die! My legs were itching because they had not had any circulation all summer. I am going to lift weights on Wednesday, so that should be fun! I just need to stop stopping! The other bad news is that I have gained back some of the weight that I worked so hard to take off. Stupid! Oh well, we are starting over, and we are back in the routine!

Kyra had her "Flower field" day last Monday. The class dresses up in pioneer dress, and only take and use what they would of had in the 1800's. They go to a prairie school for the day. She wrote with a Quill and ink, took jerky, cornbread, apple and milk in a glass jar for lunch. She had a good time, and hopefully is more thankful for the life she has in 2010.

I sat down the other day and was thinking of the activities that the girls and Mark and I are doing this year. Here is an example of our weeks:
Monday- piano lessons and Weight Watchers for Mom
Tuesday- Story Hour at the library and this week volleyball clinic
Wednesday- Midweek at Church, and Advent starting soon
Thursday- Girl Scouts and Choir for Mom
Friday- Nothing as of yet!
Saturday- Volleyball games for 2 months
I always said that I was not going to be one of those Mom's that ran their kids all over the place, and here I am. Well most of the places the girls walk to, but I do have to pick them up.

We had an electrical storm come through last night. We had very little rain, but plenty of lightning bolts that drilled the ground. We have not had rain for a good while, so you can imagine what happened... yes fires! Mark is on the rural fire board, so went out after work to fill trucks with water and have things ready as needed. He came home last night (after I was in bed) with a list of repairs for most of the fire trucks. We have been lucky most of this year with not too many fires, then had 4 last night. Murphy's Law.

I am trying to get laundry done, plus have to get my cake into town for the funeral dinner, so better keep moving. Until next week.

Summer is done! Time to Blog!

I have been told by several people that I have not done well with the blogging this summer. My last post was in May, it is now the middle of September. I guess they are right, I need to get my blog done. I my defence, this summer has been a whirl wind of activity, and to top it off my computer crashed. I am writing today on a borrowed computer. I forget sometimes that everything that I had set up on my old computer is not on this one, so it does take a while to get everything done, like a slide show and a blog written. Well, sit back, relax, and enjoy catching up on the Douthit's summer.

I think that I will divide the summer into months and try to remember what happened each month. In May I flew to Amarillo to help Mom after her knee replacement surgery. The girls got out of school May 23rd.

June. The girls started swim team practice every morning, and they were suppose to have their first meet on June 12th. The first meet was scheduled for Bridgeport, but we had to cancel at the last min. due to the high that day only suppose to be 53, and it was suppose to rain all day. That doesn't go over too well with an outdoor pool. It did not hurt my feelings, as it is a very long day for the parents that have to work the meet and make sure kids are where they are suppose to be. The next meet was in Alliance, and my parents were able to come up to watch the meet, then took the girls to Texas for 2 weeks.

July. Around the first part of July we had a hail Storm that wiped out my garden. I had such a nice garden this year, then nothing. Most everything came back, but was very delayed. It is Sept. 13th, and I am just starting to pick tomatoes. anyway, we went to Texas the week after the 4th, brought the girls home. They missed one swim meet, but there was no other time for them to go to Texas. Both girls started a multi media class at the school, that met every day for 3 weeks. They both had a great time, and hope they offer it again next year. The swim team season ended July 17th, with the metal meet in Rushville. Neither girl got a metal this year. They are getting into the older ages where you have to be really good to get a metal. Both did well this year, and improved their times by 3-4 seconds in each event that they swam.

August. We finally decided that if we were going to take a family vacation that we better get it done before school started again. Marks work has a summer employees picnic. We tubed the Niobrara river at Valentine. We got on charter buses Sat. morning, and got home that night about 9:30 p.m. We had loads of fun, and only had one X-rated moment when I made the girls look to the other side of the river and "do not turn around until I say you can". Girls- "why?" Mom- "Because I said so!" We found out that on any given weekend 3-5 thousand people float down the river, and yes alcohol is allowed. The X-rated moment was from some collage kids trying to impress each other with their bodies. The next day we loaded up the camper and headed to a camp ground near Laramie Peak. We were only able to stay until Tues., but it was enough to give us a much needed rest. Mom and Dad came back up to our area, as Dad had his 60th class reunion. Our niece Bailey was able to come with Mom and Dad, so it was nice to see her again. It was a nice weekend, until Mom and Dad's little dog ran out on the road to chase a car, and got hit. There was nothing the vet could do for him, so he is buried in our back pasture. Not a good way to end a visit. School started on August 19, with Lexi in 6th grade, and Kyra in 4th. Mark's brother Jay, bought a house in Casper WY, so the end of August found us in WY helping him paint and move. We all worked hard and had every room in the house painted, and everything moved in. Nothing was put away, but that is Jay's problem.

September. The 2nd we headed back to Texas for my parents 50th wedding anniversary. Us kids had a party planned for them at a nice party room. The party was on Saturday night. Friday night all us kids and spouses plus a cousin and caterer got together at Lynne's house and made all the food for the party. After the food prep was done, Jay (Lynne's) husband declared a foose ball tournament. I have not laughed so hard in a long time. The party was nice, and it was good to see a lot of old friends and relatives. We came home again on Labor Day, back to work and school, then headed back to Jay's (Mark's Brother) house to help take out walls and lay hardwood floors.

Now you should be caught up with what we did this summer. I know that I am missing a bunch of stuff, but I can only remember so much. Just fill in the blanks with work, running kids to summer reading at the library, running kids to swim meets and practices, running running running. You get the idea. Well I am not going to promise, but I will try to do a better job with a weekly blog. Enjoy the slide show, as that is mosly what our summer was. Laura

Happy Anniversary!

Happy Anniversary to me! "In sickness and health" comes to mind today. Mark was up half the night complaining that he could not breath (I was up half the night just not able to sleep). This morning he said that his stomach was not feeling well. He headed to work, then was home a half hour later because he had thrown up. So I guess the anniversary will be spent avoiding the bedroom where sickness lives.

School ended for the girls this last week. They had their field day on Monday, but it was only half a day since we have had so much rain and they needed time for the track and field to dry out. Parts of the track were still under water, so the kids were only able to run the 100m and the 50m. Lexi got 3rd in her first heat on the 100m and 3rd overall. Kyra got 2nd in her first heat of the 50m, and 7th overall. Kyra was thrilled that she could actually run and place. The rest of the week was spent trying to remember where each child was going for different field trips and end of the school year activities.

Saturday we headed to the ranch. It was sort of a dual trip. Mark has had his Dad's "old" tractor down here for almost a year. Originally he was just going to sell it for his dad, as it has not run well, and was not worth fixing. After much discussion, Mark and his dad decided to go ahead and repair the tractor. With all the sickness that Mark had this last year, it ended up taking almost a year to fix. We also had made plans with the Strawns to take their parents up to the ranch to show them around. Their parents were here for Elia's birth and baptism. Mark borrowed a pickup and trailer from work and we headed up. We got a call from Marks parents stating that we better not bring the tractor all the way up, as they got 1.2" of rain the night before, and the roads were not good. We dropped the trailer and tractor in Crawford, and then headed to the ranch with just the 2 vehicles. We made lunch out there, then Mark took a pickup load of people on a tour of the ranch. The rest of us stayed at the house and had naps and visits. We then headed back to town the long way, so we could show them a few more sights. We also did a driving tour of Fort Robinson, just to wet their appetites for a return camping trip. We then headed over to Chadron for supper then made the long trek home.

Sunday was Elia's baptism, and Mark and I were honored to be her sponsors. After church and Sunday school, we went to the Strawns for the baptismal dinner. It was a beautiful day, and we were able to sit outside as well as inside for the meal and visiting. We left about 3:00 p.m. and came home to plant the garden. As Mark said the corn should have been in 2 weeks ago. We got everything planted except the tomatoes and peppers. We were going to go to Scottsbluff tonight for our anniversary and get the rest of the plants, but I think I will go by myself after I go to Kimball.

Swim team starts this next week with practices, and the first meet is here in Bridgeport on June 12th. We are suppose to have a meeting this week, so will know the rest of the schedule then. Once again this summer will be over before we know it.

They are predicting severe weather this afternoon, and high winds. It is 11:00 a.m. and the winds have already come up, so I better head out. I am going to post this blog, then do the picture slide show tonight, so if there are no pictures check back again.

Back in the deep freeze

I am back in the deep freeze (ie: Nebraska), after a week in Texas, where the wind blew, but the temperatures were in the upper 80's to low 90's. The last day I was there, was is in the low to mid 60's, so that did acclimate me back to the 50's that will be our high this entire week.

Mom had her knee replaced on April 29th, and came home from the hospital on May 3rd. She was and is doing well. I asked her several days after surgery, if she was having any pain in the knee or other places like she was before. Her responce was "No, and that is the best part". Mom goes to the Dr. today for a followup after the surgery. She is bending her knee well, and is doing a good job straightening also, so I think he will give her a good report.

While down in Texas, my siblings and I got together to plan a 50th anniversary party for our folks. That is September 7 of this year, so I will be heading down again for that. I also talked to Mom about the girls coming down for the summer, but the summer is already getting so full, I am not sure when that is going to happen. The girl's get out of school on May 20th, but I figure it is a little early to send them down to be with a grandma that just had surgery.

While I was gone, I stopped in Denver to see my Aunt Pearl. She has also been in the hospital with an illness, so I was able to do some nursemaid stuff for her also. It was good to see her, and a friend of hers was able to take me to the airport and pick me up for my trip to Texas.

Mom and Dad have a new dog, that decided I was cool to have down there. We went for a few walks, and played ball several times. The first walk we went on, was down their main road that they live on. The further we got away from my parents house the further down his tail and ears went. When we turned around to head back to Mom and Dad's, his tail came up his ears came up and he was all happy again. I guess he thought that I was taking him somewhere and going to leave him. Mom called after I got home, and said I needed to come back and get him and he was driving them crazy wanting to go do things. Now she knows how I feel. She spoils her grand kids then sends them home, I spoil her dog and then leave.

I got home Saturday to a messy house and laundry that was washed but sitting in the baskets ready for me to fold. After re-drying all the wrinkles out, I folded and hung everything. Mark had pulled out the lasagna that I had made for them, for when I was gone, so I didn't have to fix supper. I got out the lettuce for a salad, and it had not been opened. I guess they ate, but not healthy. I think that they are glad I am home, no wrinkled clothes and vegetables to eat.

April rain showers bring May flowers

As you may have guessed by the title of this blog, we have had some rain this week. OK, we had a lot of rain. I am not sure what the official measure was, because we are usually the official measure (having the most rain gauges, means we win!), and we did not have our rain gauges out until half way through the several days of rain. On the second to last day of rain, I checked the gauge after lunch and we had 1.3 inches. I went to work in a down pour, and it rained several times that afternoon. I came home and checked the gauge again, and we had 1.2 inches. Either we have a crack in the gauge, or someone thought it would be funny to pour part of the water out and see what I would do. I am a very resourceful person, so I went and got another rain gauge and put it in the back yard. We normally have one in the front and one in the back anyway, as we might get more rain on one side of the house than the other, and we must be accurate. I figure from other people around reporting what they got, that we were over 2 inches in rain accumulation. Along with the rain we have had very cool temperatures, and of course as soon as the rain stopped, the wind came up to dry everything out good.

Last week was busy, with Harold being gone. I had one patient in Hemingford that I ended up seeing only once, so did not have to do any driving. The week went fast, but I had prepared a menu for dinners every night, so we were not tempted to eat out a bunch.

Mark wanted to go to the ranch this last weekend and fix fence, but I convinced him that it would be better for him to stay home and help me clean house. After all the rain, wind, and snow up North, and am sure he is glad he stayed home and cleaned. The house looks fairly good, I still have a few things to do this week, and hope to be able to get the laundry done on Wednesday, as it is suppose to be one of the nicest days this week, and then we are back to rain Thursday through the end of the week.

I head to Denver on Friday. I will stay with my Aunt Pearl on Friday night, then she will take me to the airport on Saturday morning. Mom is having her knee replaced on Thursday, so I want to be down there when she goes home, and then will stay for a week, to help her out with things around the house, like feeding Dad and the dogs.

Mark and the girls will be here by themselves. I made a pan of lasagna, and a pan of enchiladas. Mark can do some grilling and Lexi is planning to make spaghetti one night. I think they will do fine, and if they starve it will be their own fault.

I will try to post from Texas, but I am not promising anything. The pictures in the slide show are from last week, but wanted everyone to see them.

Spring feels like it is finally here. Yesterday was a beautiful day, with barely a breeze. When the clouds moved into the area, it was almost a relief, as it was getting hot. After Church yesterday, Mark and I planted the rest of the early garden (I had already gotten the spinach and lettuce in). We planted the onions, both white and yellow, radishes, and peas. We have never had luck with peas or green beans, but we put compost from the neighbors vet clinic on the garden, and we are irrigating different, using soaker hoses, and we hope that these changes will make the difference. I also worked in my flower beds, getting them rototilled and preen put down to stop the weed growth. I would like to get 1-2 pick-up loads of bark mulch to also put on the beds. We have several places in Scottsbluff that sell it in bulk, the problem is getting over there to get it.

Lexi was in Denver most of the weekend on a Girl Scout trip. they went to the butterfly pavilion and to the children's theater. They stayed the night on Saturday, and were home late on Sunday. She seemed to have a very good time, and has been impressing us with all her butterfly knowledge.

Kyra helped me clean house on Saturday, then as a reward was able to have a friend over on Sunday afternoon. They had a good time playing and bugging me. One small catastrophe with a burnt finger, but otherwise they did well.

Harold went to spend time with his brother again this week, so I am working his job. Luckily, I do not have any patients down in Kimball right now, so will not have that drive. I have to go to Hemmingford on MWF, which is north of Bridgeport, so I am doubly thankful not to have to drive North, then turn and go South. I have done this in the past, and I end up putting over 200 miles on my car on those days.

This week is suppose to be cooler with several days of rain. I sure am glad we got so much done in the yard yesterday. I am seeing the robins in the yard, and the birds are singing every morning. Spring is truly here!

The batteries on the camera have died, and I have not gotten new ones, so as soon as I get that done, I will try to attach a slide show, so check back later in the week.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter everyone. Yes, I am a day late, but when have I ever been on time getting greeting cards out? (Don't answer that Lynne!) As you will notice from the slide show, I have pictures from last weeks post, the tree planing, along with this weeks post of Easter. I could not find the camera last week. I asked Kyra, who was the last to have it, where the camera was, and her response was "I gave it back to you." Now I know that I am getting old and forgetful, and I think kids make that come on you faster than normal, but I know good and well that she did not give me that camera... plus I cleaned the entire upstairs, very deeply cleaned, and I could not find the camera anywhere. So on Easter morning on the way to Strawn's to take the annual Easter, everyone looks nice for once, picture, I asked the girls to look under the seats in the back of the Tahoe, and also in the pockets of the front seats. Low and behold, the camera materializes. Yeah, now we have a camera with witch to take the pictures. We get in position, the camera flashes and dies, doesn't even have enough battery to open the shutter. Thank goodness for friends with a good camera with plenty of batteries.

The rest of Easter was not nearly as exciting. We came home and did the Easter egg hunt. The girls complained that the Easter eggs were a lot harder to find this year. I guess when you get older, the Easter bunny gets a little craftier. Probably from his kids trying to make him think he is loosing his mind by saying, "but I gave it to you, remember?" Anyway, it is a good thing I was helping the Easter (Mark) Bunny, as he wanted to hide the Easter eggs over the entire 5.5 acres, so we would have an all day hunt.

The girls both got movies in their Easter baskets, so the afternoon was spent watching movies. We did watch one, then went for a family bike ride in the wind. We then came back and watched the second movie. Left overs were brought out for supper, and everyone was ready for bed by 9:00, ok maybe I was the only one ready for bed, but with all that movie watching, I didn't get my Sunday afternoon nap.

Unfortunately today was a typical Monday. I went in to the out patient clinic at 8:00 this morning. Headed home about 10:00 and picked up the girls. We headed to Scottsbluff and did some shopping at Staples (for the church) then Target. I dropped Lexi off at the orthodontist a little early thinking she might get in early, then we could go to lunch before heading to Kimball. I in the mean time I ran to Wal mart to get oil and filter so Mark could change the bug's oil. I got back to pick up the girl's, and they were in the waiting room. I'm thinking great she is done. No such luck. Her appointment was at 11:50 and I got there at 12:05. She didn't get in until 12:20. She finally came out about 12:40 with her technician with her. It was announced that Lexi got a strike. OK, what is a strike. She has not been brushing her teeth like she is suppose too, so she got a strike. If she gets 2 more, they take her braces off, even if they are not done. I understand having to scare kids into doing what they are suppose too, but I was a little ticked at being threatened as the parent. I felt like saying "well, you can just refund all the thousands of dollars that I have paid you then!" After leaving the Orthodontist office, we were all starving. No time to have a sit down meal like we had planned, so we went through Arby's drive through. I ordered 3 meals, non of which were up sized, and the total was over $18. After putting $55 in the gas tank, we headed for Kimball. We didn't get home until after 5:00, then it was dinner and all the fun getting ready for school things. Now the day is almost gone, and I have one yet to get into to bed, then I plan on heading there myself.

Take care until next week.

Monday, March 29, 2010

Once again it has been almost a month since my last post. My how time flies. I am currently waiting on a phone call from Harold (my boss). I got a call from Kimball that there is another new patient that needs a PT eval, so need to know when Harold can go down to do the eval. So this might be a very long or very short post, depending on what Harold says.

I was looking at the side show from my last post, and seeing the difference in weather. Those pictures are full of snow, and even though the cold weather has not completely left, it is getting warmer. Today is suppose to be 75 and tomorrow is 81, then we start cooling down and are suppose to get some rain on Thursday and Friday. I am rushing around trying to get as many loads of laundry as I can get, on the line before I go to work. Yesterday was a nice day. Kyra spent most of the day outside with her dad and friends. Lexi wasn't feeling well, so took a 4 hour nap. The Strawn's came over for supper, and Sarah the kids and I got a walk in before it was time to cook.

On Friday, after school and work, we loaded up the Tahoe with a bunch of suit cases and sleeping bags, plus 4 girls and headed to Crawford. They had the annual scout tree planting at Fort Robinson this weekend. For those of you that don't know, a fire went through Fort Robinson in 1989, burning a good potion of trees. The boy scouts started replanting trees several years ago, and the girl scouts joined in a few years later. There were 10,000 trees to plant this weekend. We had 3 adults that split our group up. I had 4 Brownies, and we were able to plant 50 trees in the 2 hours we were out. We were very excited, when the other groups came back having only planted 25 trees each. It was a cold windy day, but we got down in some draws, and were blocked from the wind, so it wasn't too bad. On a personal note, my husband and Father-in-law have always complained that the fort has the scouts plant trees in places where there were never trees growing, so I made sure my girls were planting by fallen trees and in areas that had a lot of trees. The rest of the day was spent eating lunch, then the Fort had the museums open to the scouts to tour. All the girls and leaders headed back to Bridgeport about 2:30 p.m., but we stayed until 6:00 p.m., so our girls could visit with Grandma and Grandpa.

This week will continue on the "too busy to get everything done theme", with Holy week, and needing to get 3 bulletins done. Not sure what we are doing for Easter. I guess if Strawn's aren't invited anywhere, we will spend time with them. Grandma and Grandpa COWS may come down, but not sure as of today. I just hope the weather turns out nice. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter!

Just got my call from Harold. He is going to Kimball on Wednesday, so I will have that day off. We are closing the clinic on Friday, then I will see patients on Monday, as he will still be out of town. Lexi has an orthodontist appointment on Monday, so Harold is going to schedule everyone early so we can be gone to Scottsbluff by 11:00 a.m. Her appointment is at 11:50 a.m., then we will eat lunch then the girls will go with me to Kimball. They enjoy spending time at the nursing home. The activity director always gives them a job to do. Lexi also enjoys pushing wheel chairs for me, and helping in other ways.

Good morning. Yes, it has been a few weeks again since I have posted, but hopefully my routine is back to normal and will have Monday mornings off (my posting day), so can get things done like I use too.

Last weekend, our family took a mini vacation to Cheyenne WY. We have had a gift card to a Marriott hotel for 15 months, so needed to get that used up. We also had 2 gift cards to Red Lobster. We headed out Saturday morning, and got to Cheyenne about 11:00. We did a little shopping, then headed to Olive Garden to eat lunch. We then shopped some more then headed to the hotel. We all donned our swim suits and headed for the pool and hot tub. After showers, Mark and I left the girls to watch TV, and we went to look at campers. We couldn't afford anything, but it was fun to look and dream. We picked up the girls went to the mall and looked at more campers then headed to Red Lobster where we ate so many appetizers that we were full before our meals got to us. We then headed to Sam's to walk off our meal. Back to the hotel were the girl's and Mark swam and sat in the hot tub while I sat and read my book. Sunday morning we did a little more shopping then grabbed lunch before heading home. Sorry there are no pictures of our trip. I never even got the camera out.

This last weekend was busy for us. The girls were out of school on Friday. Lexi had a girl scout activity in Chadron, so was gone all day. She got car sick on the way up there, then they went to a planetarium and she was sick in there with all the movement going on, then was sick for the car ride home even though her leader put her in the front seat. Lexi then had another girl scout activity in Sidney on Saturday through Sunday morning. We made sure she took her Dramamine before she left on Saturday.

Mark, Kyra and I headed to Scottsbluff on Saturday afternoon. Kyra has been saving her money for a bike, so Saturday was the day to go and get it. As you can see by the above pictures she is very happy with her purchase.

Sunday afternoon was a nice windy day. We went and cut a pickup load of wood, then came home a split and stacked it. We then went to Strawn's for supper. It was so nice not to have to cook after being out of the house all day.

Now it is Monday again, so the work week begins. I now have a patient down in Kimball, so will be heading there this afternoon. Hope everyone has a good week. We are suppose to get rain for 3 days then wind, then maybe nice again for the weekend.

All's well... for the moment

I have been so negligent in writing this blog. I will try to catch everyone up on what has been going on in the Douthit house.

Mark is well (for the most part). He finished his antibiotics last week, but is still tired a lot. He also wears out easy. The weather has been a little nicer, so he has been trying to get out and get fresh air when he can. He went to an equipment auction yesterday, but his mean wife would not give him the checkbook to buy a tractor.

Kyra had her 9th birthday last Saturday, February 6. I talked her into postponing her party until this weekend, as Mark had come down with a stomach bug and was not feeling the best. The girls both were sick with this bug and it had a tenancy to make you sick leave then come back 2-3 more times. After having to postpone Kyra's party last year because she had strep throat, then having to change plans the next week when I got it, I decided that I was going to make sure everyone was well before the party. This year worked out great! The girl's were out of school Friday, so we went to the bowling alley at 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. We had the entire place to ourselves. The kids had a blast. They bowled 2 games, then we headed home. They were able to play outside for a while, then came in and opened presents while the pizza was cooking. After pizza we had cake and ice cream then more playing until I made them start winding down at 11:00. I had 2 fall right to sleep, another one in about 30 min., then I made the T.V. go off and sat in the dark until I heard deep breathing. I got to bed about 12:15. The next morning started bright and early with giggling girl's at 7:00 a.m. I proceeded to fix breakfast of apple pancakes, sausage and eggs. At one point I was deemed the "Best Cook", to which Kyra responds "that's why I hired her". OK where is my pay for all this work? The girl's got to play for a while, then had to take 3 in for basket ball games, so took everyone home at 9:30. The rest of Saturday was spent napping, doing laundry and cleaning the basement.

Today we went to church and bible study, then came home to the most pleasant sight. The dog had diarrhea on the carpet upstairs (of course the light colored one). What I want to know is why they never go on the linoleum that is only 2 feet away. On went the rubber gloves, and out came the carpet cleaner. Mark said after it was all cleaned up "boy that really stunk", you think, yeah, my stomach was getting queasy, jeez all the way in the kitchen, I didn't have any problems being right next to it cleaning it up! Men!

Tonight we have the "Sweet heart" dinner for the hospital foundation. I guess that will be our Valentines dinner this year, a nice intimate dinner with 150 other people in the gym at the community center. Oh well, it is for a good cause.

Sick but better

This is sure to be a short post, but wanted everyone to know that Mark is doing better. When last I wrote, Mark had been put into the hospital for an over night observation. He was dismissed on Monday morning, after having several rounds of antibiotics and steroids with the IV fluids. He came home and by Tuesday afternoon was still feeling rough. He complained that his heart was racing, and he could not sleep. Called the Dr., and he wanted Mark in for an EKG. That turned out to be fine, but Mark's O2 sats were low. After a chest X-ray and a C-T scan, it was determined that he still had the sinus infection and he now also had pneumonia. Mark was admitted that night, and got out of the hospital on Friday afternoon. As punishment for making me take care of him for 2 weeks, I made Mark go to Wal mart yesterday. The walking did him good, and fortunately there are enough benches that he was able to sit and rest when he needed to. Today he is talking about cleaning the chimney, so better go see that he doesn't over do.

Sick... and not in the good way!

Once again it has been a couple of weeks since I posted. This will most likely be a shot post, as I am tired and ready for bed. Unfortunately, if I don't write this tonight, it will not get done.

As you have probably guessed from the title of this blog, someone is sick in the family. I will give you 3 guesses... Yes, it is Mark again! He has been sick for a week, and was put into the hospital today. It all started last Sunday with a fever. Lexi had a similar sickness during Christmas break, so figured Mark had the same thing, which I am still convinced that he did. Anyway, Lexi ran a temp for 4 days, then had a set back and ran a temp one more day. When Mark was sick for 3 days I figured he had the same thing going on. He felt some better on Thursday, and decided to spend some time outside since it was a nice day. Of course when you are outside you have to scoop the ice off the driveway, right? So he had a set back, and started running a temp again. Went to the Dr. finally on Friday. Mark was put on anitbiotics and some cough meds, because now he has a sinus infection on top of the flu. So Saturday comes and he is feeling better, so he has to change the oil in my car, right? So now we have another setback. This morning, he is feeling the worst he has felt the entire time, so I call the Dr. and he has Mark come in for an out patient Rx in the hospital. After we get to the hospital, they decided to keep him overnight, and push the fluids and the antibiotics also they are going to give him some steroids to decrease the swelling in the sinuses. His temp has gone from 101 to 99.2 when I left tonight. The plan is for Mark to come home tomorrow, and hopefully he will be on the mend.

The girls are staying with friends tonight, as I have to be to work at 7:30 in the morning, and there will be no one here to get them up and on the bus in the morning. I am looking forward to a full nights sleep with no kids or husband waking me up... of course the dog is still here, so will have to have a talk with him before going to bed.

One bit of new news is that Lexi is no longer playing the trumpet in band. She got pushed off the risers during practice right before Christmas and broke her trumpet (fortunately she was just using one of the school's). Her band teacher asked if she would like to switch instruments and she decided to play the clarinet. She is the only one in her class that is playing the instrument, and she is doing much better on it than on the trumpet.

Well, better get to bed. Keep Mark in your prayers.

Shower

I think this might be a record. I am posting on Sunday night. We have had a very lazy day here at the Douthit house. After church, everyone found their favorite spot and stayed there until about 3:00 in the afternoon. Mark and I watched a movie, then at 3 when it was over, had to take our Sunday afternoon naps. The girls went outside and played, and Mark and I have had no energy to do much else. Mark did move from downstairs to upstairs. I managed to unload and reload the dishwasher.

Yesterday was a busy day. Our friend Muffy (yes, that is her real name) is having a baby. Another gal and I through her a baby shower in Alliance. The shower started at 2:00, which meant that I needed to be up there by 1:00 which further meant that I needed to leave Bridgeport at 12:15 at the latest. The girl's went with me, and were a big help. The party was in the basement at the Country Club, which meant a lot of running up and down the stairs, that's when the girls really became handy. We had a nice turnout. We planned on about 19, and had 26. Muffy got a lot of nice things. I made the 2 cakes that are in the slide show. The one is a diaper cake. It was so much fun to make, and Muffy did not want to take it apart to use the diapers.

After clean up and a diet coke run before heading home, we got home about 6:00. Strawn's came over for supper, but brought the meal with them. It was so nice not to have to make a meal after being gone all day.

Mark work Saturday morning, then split wood and filled the wood box in the garage. The plan today was to go cut some more wood as we have only what is in the garage, but as stated before that did not get done.

The girl's started cookie sales for Girl Scouts on Friday. I took them to the hospital, clinics and to a few friends houses, and they both have about 30 boxes sold. Kyra has the goal of selling 500 boxes, and asked if I hopes she made her goal. I told her NO. But why not MOM! Because then we have to deliver 500 boxes. But that does not matter right now.

Well, it is about time to start dinner, so will close for this week. Enjoy the slide show.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I am a little late wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, but right on time for the Happy New Year. It is new year's day, breakfast has been served, the maid is doing the dishes (ie. the dishwasher), and I have the laundry started. Sounds like a fun new year doesn't it. I plan to take down all the Christmas decoration today, even though Christmas is not officially over until January 6th, with Epiphany. I am ready to get my house back to normal, and do a deep cleaning at the same time.

Christmas was a quiet one for us. Grandma and Grandpa COWS decided to stay in Crawford for Christmas, so it was just the 4 of us. We woke up to wind on Christmas morning, and by the time we got out of church, the snow had started, and the wind continued. The wood stove has been going non stop, and we had to close the curtains at the front of the house to keep the upstairs warm. We survived the Christmas blizzard of 2009, and had a surprisingly little amount of snow on the ground when it was all over.

We opened presents on Christmas Eve, which is our tradition. The girls were surprised by a Wii. This was the best present for a family that were stuck indoors all together. We played games all day, and I was too tired to do much else, so made grilled cheese and soup for our Christmas supper. We were all sore the next day after playing so many games. Who would have guessed that a video game could make you sore.

After the bad weather passed, we decided that we had better restock the wood pile. We headed out Sunday morning after church. About 10 min. into cutting wood, I jumped into the pickup to move it, and my back stayed out. I finished helping with the wood, but have been paying for it all week. I am now able to get up and down without looking like I am 9 months pregnant, but am still waking up in the mornings to my back hurting. I think it is just a pulled muscle, and should be better soon. I plan to make sure I have a lot of help cleaning and putting Christmas stuff away so I don't re-injure.

We have had one extra for supper each night this week, with the exception of Christmas Eve and day. Our Pastor has been without his family, so has been bumming meals off us. Just kidding! We have enjoyed having him, and he is getting so comfortable, that he just comes in and gets his own drink, and if he wants something gets up and gets it himself. That is the best kind of house guest.

We had an impromptu music concert of the Bursting Flame Girls, so enjoy the music video that I pirated of the concert.
